What advice would you give a prospective med student?

I would advise any student that is applying this cycle to stay strong, because they are experiencing one of the most difficult and unique application cycles. In general, I would also say that the app cycle is a long drawn-out process, but patience is key! Be sure to look into each school’s mission statements, and make sure that your own experiences and values match.

Why did you choose Long School of Medicine?

I chose Long School of Medicine because from the moment I walked into the interview, I felt seen and welcome. As soon as I walked in, I was amazed to see that not only was the Medical Student Association on display, but also the school’s Latino Medical Student Association and Pride/LGBT association. As an LGBT applicant, I felt immediately reassured that this school was going to be a safe space and also a place that encourages diversity, and this put Long SOM at the top of my list!

Describe the Long School of Medicine in three words…

Long School of Medicine encourages diversity, excellence, and unique learning opportunities. From Dr. Kellaway you learn very quickly that Long is a top-ranked Texas Medical School, with match rates in the 99% consistently and matches to a wide variety of specialties! Also, I learned that Long SOM has unique track programs in research, and medical education, which I am hoping to take part of in order to enrich my academic experience. Diversity is key at Long SOM, not only socially and culturally but in experience! I have met most of my classmates already and can see that they are a wide variety of ages and have different perspectives and interests. I’m so excited to be a student here!

What is your favorite playlist, and why?

My favorite playlist is my own! It’s called “mood” because it has songs with a variety of emotions and feelings that are not limited to one genre. I love that it’s my own playlist because all the music was handpicked by me, so I know I’ll listen to it!
